General Strike on January 30, No work, No School, No Shopping in Minnesota

Organizers and activists are calling for a nationwide general strike on Friday to protest the activities of the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) across the country. They will continue the strike until the agents, along with their funding, are withdrawn and are ready to hit the Trump administration where it hurts most: in the wallet.
This is especially true in Minnesota, where nearly 3,000 federal agents have been deployed as part of a vigorous crackdown on alleged fraud.
DHS operations have resulted in the deaths of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old poet and mother of three, who was shot and killed by an ICE agent on January 7, and Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA nurse, who was killed by DHS agents while observing the operations on January 24.
The goal of the general strike on January 30th is to ask people not to go to work, school, or buy anything on that day. This creates an economic shutdown and an opportunity to participate in local protests against ICE.
"The entire country is shocked and outraged by the brutal murders of Alex Pretti, Renee Good, Silverio Villegas González, and Keith Porter Jr. at the hands of federal agents," states the National Shutdown website. "While Trump and other right-wing politicians vilify them by calling them 'terrorists,' the video evidence makes it clear beyond a doubt: they were gunned down in broad daylight simply for exercising their First Amendment right to protest mass deportations."
"Every day, ICE, Border Patrol, and other agents of Trump's racist agenda enter our communities to abduct our neighbors and sow fear," it continues. "It's time for all of us to unite in a national shutdown and say enough is enough!"
The general strike is being organized through National Shutdown, a decentralized grassroots movement in several cities. It has been endorsed by 50501, CodePink, the Campaign to Defend Immigrant Families, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the North Carolina Poor Campaign, the North Texas Area Labor Federation, the Los Angeles Tenants Union, the Palestinian Youth Movement, several student groups at the University of Minnesota, and more.
The national strike is a continuation of the statewide strike that took place in Minnesota on January 23, organized by a local chapter of Indivisible, a grassroots volunteer group dedicated to fostering civic engagement and education about progressive policies.
Several well-known celebrities have endorsed the national general strike. Ariana Grande, Mark Ruffalo, and Jenna Ortega reposted an image promoting the action on their Instagram stories. Hannah Einbinder wrote in a post: "Withholding our labor and capital is our most effective tool. National strike, spread the word!"
Jamie Lee Curtis and Pedro Pascal each shared a graphic featuring images of Pretti and Good with the caption "Pretti Good, reason for a national strike." Pascal wrote in the caption: "The truth is the dividing line between a democratic government and an authoritarian regime. Mr. Pretti and René Good are dead. The American people deserve to know what happened."
Edward Norton also told the Los Angeles Times at the Sundance Film Festival: "I think what they're doing in Minnesota with the strike needs to expand. I think we should be talking about a national general economic strike until this is over."
On January 23, more than 50,000 people marched in -20 degree temperatures, while more than 700 businesses in Minnesota closed, according to the organizers of Indivisible Twin Cities.

Organizadores y activistas convocan a una huelga general nacional el viernes para protestar contra las actividades del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) y el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) en todo el país. Continuarán la huelga hasta que los agentes, junto con sus fondos, se retiren y estén listos para golpear a la administración Trump donde más le duele: en el bolsillo.
Esto es especialmente cierto en Minnesota, donde se han desplegado casi 3000 agentes federales como parte de una enérgica ofensiva contra el presunto fraude.

La huelga general se está organizando a través de National Shutdown, un movimiento de base descentralizado en varias ciudades. Ha sido respaldada por 50501, CodePink, la Campaña para la Defensa de las Familias Inmigrantes, el Consejo de Relaciones Estadounidenses-Islámicas (CAIR), la Campaña de los Pobres de Carolina del Norte, la Federación Laboral del Área del Norte de Texas, el Sindicato de Inquilinos de Los Ángeles, el Movimiento Juvenil Palestino, varios grupos estudiantiles de la Universidad de Minnesota, entre otros.
