Erika Ramos, the mother of a 5-year-old boy who was taken into custody by ICE in Minnesota last week, described her anguish as she watched from a window as immigration agents took her son and his partner away. 

Liam Conejo Ramos and his Ecuadorian father, Adrián Alexander Conejo Arias, were returning from Liam's preschool on January 20 when they were confronted by immigration agents, according to Zena Stenvik, superintendent of Columbia Heights Public Schools. A school board member who witnessed the father's arrest said last week that she heard an adult inside the house pleading with the agents to let the child go.

Erika Ramos, Liam's mother, said she witnessed the scene from the window and couldn't do anything. Adrián repeatedly begged me not to go outside because he was afraid they would arrest me too.” Ramos said that immigration agents saw her, took Liam out of the car, and brought him to the front door so she would open it.

“They knocked and knocked, and my son Liam kept saying, ‘Mommy, open the door.’ I was terrified,” she said, sobbing.

She said she didn’t open the door because she was afraid they would arrest her and leave her other son alone.

“Since I didn’t open the door, they took Liam to the ICE van. It all seemed like an attempt to free me, to provoke me, as if they wanted me to run desperately to find my son so they could arrest me too,”.  “They used my son as bait.” Even so, my husband desperately insisted that I not go out, especially since we have another child and I'm pregnant,” she said. “His only intention was to protect us, like any responsible husband and father.” The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated Friday that the boy's father fled from agents who approached his car, abandoning Liam.

“For the child's safety, one of our ICE officers remained with him while the other officers arrested Conejo Arias,” the DHS stated.

Ramos denied the DHS allegations, stating, “I repeat, at no time did my husband do what they say, abandon my son.” No, he never did.”

The agency said Liam’s mother refused officers’ attempts to have her take custody of the boy. His father agreed to keep Liam in his care, DHS said.

Both Liam and his father were transferred from Minnesota to Texas, and the restraining order states they are at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center.

Ramos said she was worried about her son’s health. She said she had spoken with her husband, who told her Liam had been sick.

“He says he has a fever, stomachache, and diarrhea,” she said, her voice breaking.

She also said her husband told her that neither he nor Liam were being given any medication.

On Thursday, the Trump administration said a pediatrician examined Liam “and found no medical problems.”

“It is standard policy to provide medical care from the moment a foreign national enters ICE custody,” said Dr. Sean Conley, acting director of the The Office of Health Security, the DHS public health authority, issued a statement shared on X by DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin.

“This includes a medical, dental, and mental health evaluation within 12 hours of arrival at each detention facility, a comprehensive health assessment within 14 days of entering ICE custody or arriving at a facility, and access to necessary medical appointments and 24-hour emergency care,” Conley explained in the statement.

Ramos stated that neither she nor her husband have criminal records and that they both entered the country legally under the Biden administration’s CBP One program, which was later repealed by the Trump administration.

Ramos stated that she would ask authorities to “bring them back to me.”

“Please release them,” she said.

On Tuesday, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order that prevented the Trump administration from deporting Liam last week.

Democratic Representative Joaquin Castro, of Texas, stated that she visited Liam and his father at the detention center on Wednesday.

"I demanded his release and told him how much his family, his school, and our country love him and how much we pray for him," she stated on social media.

Tuesday's order prevents them from being deported or transferred out of the Western District of Texas pending a new court directive.

The case has drawn scrutiny from critics who have accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of using children as bait. The agency has defended its actions.

"Our agents made multiple attempts to have the alleged mother, who was inside the home, assume custody of her son," the agency stated.

“Como no abrí la puerta, se llevaron a Liam a la camioneta de ICE. Todo parecía un intento de liberarme, de provocarme, como si quisieran que corriera desesperadamente a buscar a mi hijo para arrestarme también”, dijo.

Aun así, mi esposo insistió desesperadamente en que no saliera, sobre todo porque tenemos otro hijo y estoy embarazada”, dijo. “Su única intención era protegernos, como cualquier esposo y padre responsable”. El jueves, la administración Trump informó que un pediatra examinó a Liam "y no encontró ningún problema médico".

Ramos declaró que solicitaría a las autoridades que “me los devuelvan”.

“Por favor, libérenlos”, dijo.

El martes, un juez federal emitió una orden de restricción temporal que impidió que la administración Trump deportara a Liam la semana pasada.

El representante demócrata Joaquín Castro, de Texas, dijo que visitó a Liam y a su padre en el centro de detención el miércoles.

“Exigí su liberación y le dije cuánto lo aman su familia, su escuela y nuestro país, y cuánto oramos por él”, dijo en redes sociales.

La orden del martes impide que sean deportados o transferidos fuera del Distrito Oeste de Texas a la espera de nuevas directivas judiciales.

El caso ha sido objeto de escrutinio por parte de críticos que han acusado al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) de usar a niños como cebo. La agencia ha defendido sus acciones.

“Nuestros agentes hicieron múltiples intentos para que la presunta madre, que se encontraba dentro de la casa, asumiera la custodia de su hijo”, declaró la agencia.
