Cuban officials reported that a speedboat registered in Florida violated its territorial waters on Wednesday, triggering an armed confrontation with Cuban border guard troops, in which four people on board were killed.

The Cuban Interior Ministry reported in a statement on social media that a Cuban border guard commander was wounded, in addition to six people aboard the US vessel.

The statement indicated that the people aboard the US-registered vessel initiated the shooting, which took place one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel, off the northern coast of Cuba.

“When a surface unit of the Cuban Interior Ministry’s Border Guard Troops, with five military personnel on board, approached the vessel for identification, the crew of the offending speedboat opened fire on the Cuban personnel, wounding the Cuban vessel’s commander,” the statement said.

The wounded were evacuated and received medical assistance, according to the statement.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would conduct an independent investigation into the incident before responding.

“We’re going to find out exactly what happened here and then we’ll respond accordingly,” he said while attending a conference with Caribbean leaders in St. Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday.

Rubio said, “It’s very unusual to see shootings on the open sea like this. It’s not something that happens every day. It’s something that, frankly, hasn’t happened with Cuba in a long time.”

The U.S. Coast Guard is in constant contact with the Cuban border guard, Rubio said, adding that he was briefed on the incident Wednesday morning.

Vice President J.D. Vance stated Wednesday that he was aware of the incident but had no further details.

“We don’t know many details, so I’ll let the White House provide more information as we receive it,” he said during a question-and-answer session following an announcement about fraud. “It’s certainly a situation we’re monitoring; hopefully, it’s not as serious as we fear. But I can’t say more, I simply don’t know more.”

Tensions between the United States and Cuba have escalated due to the Trump administration’s restrictions on oil shipments to Cuba, particularly from Venezuela, although the United States announced Wednesday that it would allow some sales to the Cuban private sector.

Several Florida officials have called for an investigation into the incident. The state’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, stated on X that he has “directed the State Attorney’s Office to work with our federal, state, and law enforcement partners to initiate an investigation.” He added that “the Cuban government cannot be trusted.”

Representative Carlos Giménez, a Republican from Florida, called the confrontation a "massacre" and stated that the United States must determine what happened and whether there were any casualties among U.S. citizens or residents.

Similarly, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democrat from Florida, called for an investigation and stated that the Cuban government's version of events could not be trusted "without scrutiny." "My office has contacted the State Department for more information, but it's important to note that this occurred despite the Trump administration's ongoing negotiations with the Cuban regime," she stated on X.

Funcionarios cubanos informaron que una lancha rápida registrada en Florida violó sus aguas territoriales el miércoles, lo que desencadenó un enfrentamiento armado con tropas de la guardia fronteriza cubana, en el que murieron cuatro personas a bordo.

El Ministerio del Interior de Cuba informó en un comunicado en redes sociales que un comandante de la guardia fronteriza cubana resultó herido, además de seis personas a bordo del buque estadounidense.

El comunicado indicó que las personas a bordo del buque estadounidense iniciaron el tiroteo, que tuvo lugar a una milla náutica al noreste del canal El Pino, frente a la costa norte de Cuba.

“Cuando una unidad de superficie de las Tropas de la Guardia Fronteriza del Ministerio del Interior de Cuba, con cinco militares a bordo, se acercó a la embarcación para su identificación, la tripulación de la lancha rápida agresora abrió fuego contra el personal cubano, hiriendo al comandante del buque cubano”, indicó el comunicado.

Los heridos fueron evacuados y recibieron asistencia médica, según el comunicado.

El secretario de Estado, Marco Rubio, afirmó que Estados Unidos realizaría una investigación independiente sobre el incidente antes de responder.

“Vamos a averiguar exactamente qué ocurrió aquí y luego responderemos en consecuencia”, declaró el miércoles durante una conferencia con líderes caribeños en San Cristóbal y Nieves.

Rubio añadió: “Es muy inusual ver tiroteos en alta mar como este. No es algo que ocurra todos los días. Es algo que, francamente, no ha ocurrido con Cuba en mucho tiempo”.

El representante Carlos Giménez, republicano por Florida, calificó el enfrentamiento de "masacre" y afirmó que Estados Unidos debe determinar qué sucedió y si hubo víctimas entre ciudadanos o residentes estadounidenses.

De igual manera, la representante Debbie Wasserman Schultz, demócrata de Florida, solicitó una investigación y declaró que no se podía confiar en la versión del gobierno cubano de los hechos "sin escrutinio".
