Andrea Velez,  a U.S. citizen who was detained by immigration agents and accused of obstructing an arrest, before her case was ultimately dismissed, said she is still traumatized by what happened. Velez was in downtown Los Angeles on June 24 when she was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. She was charged with assaulting a federal officer while he was attempting to arrest a suspect.

A federal criminal complaint alleged that an agent was chasing after a man, and Velez stepped into the agent’s path and extended her arm “in an apparent effort to prevent him from apprehending the male subject he was chasing.”

The complaint said that Velez’s arm hit the agent in the face.

Velez said she denied any wrongdoing and insisted she was a U.S. citizen. She was taken to a detention center in downtown Los Angeles where she gave officers her driver’s license and her health insurance card, but she was still booked into jail.

She said she spent two days in the detention center, where she had nothing to drink for 24 hours.

Velez said the ordeal traumatized her, and she has not been able to physically return to work.

Andrea Vélez, una ciudadana estadounidense que fue detenida por agentes de inmigración y acusada de obstruir un arresto, antes de que su caso fuera finalmente desestimado, dijo que todavía está traumatizada por lo sucedido. Vélez estaba en el centro de Los Ángeles el 24 de junio cuando fue detenida por oficiales de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas. Fue acusada de agredir a un oficial federal mientras intentaba arrestar a un sospechoso.

Una denuncia penal federal alegó que un agente estaba persiguiendo a un hombre, y Vélez entró en el camino del agente y extendió su brazo "en un aparente esfuerzo por evitar que aprehendiera al sujeto masculino que estaba persiguiendo".

La denuncia decía que el brazo de Vélez golpeó al agente en la cara.

Vélez dijo que negó cualquier irregularidad e insistió en que era ciudadana estadounidense. La llevaron a un centro de detención en el centro de Los Ángeles, donde le dio a los oficiales su licencia de conducir y su tarjeta de seguro médico, pero aún así estaba en la cárcel.

Dijo que pasó dos días en el centro de detención, donde no tuvo nada que beber durante 24 horas.

Vélez dijo que el calvario la traumatizó, y no ha podido volver físicamente al trabajo.
